Beeslack Community High School offers a wide range of community based activities for all ages and abilities.       DAYTIME SWIM CLASSES
      Daytime Swim Class times may vary from term to term as these are dependent upon availability of facilities. Specific enquiries should be made through Beeslack Community Education office.

      ALL OTHER DAY/EVENING CLASSES (Vocational/Non vocational)
      Beeslack offer classes that run for 4 terms per year.  To book a class payment of fees must be made in advance; this can be done in person or by post.  If we have insufficient numbers to enable us to run a class, the class will be postponed until we can reach the required minimum numbers. If a class is cancelled for any reason an additional week will be added.  Class participants will be issued with enrolments letters two weeks before the new term fees are due. If payments are not received by the due date then places will be offered to others from our waiting lists. PLEASE AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT BY PAYING PROMPTLY.

      VOLUNTEERING
      Opportunities exist in several of our clubs for enthusiastic volunteers. We organise Easter and Summer activity clubs for primary and secondary school pupils.  We have a Family Disabled Club that meets on a weekly basis for all ages and abilities. This is an excellent opportunity to gain confidence and experience especially if you are interested in working within a caring setting.  Not only do you obtain work experience but if you are aged between 11 – 25 year olds there is also opportunities to work towards the Saltire Volunteering Award. This is your opportunity to do both.  Volunteering is such a valuable experience for yourself and the adults/children who take part.
      Activities that volunteers are required for:

      • Beeslack Family Disabled Club requires help with Cooking, Swimming, Arts and Crafts, Woodwork Activity Programme. 
      • Easter/Summer Buzz Club would like help with, Arts & Crafts, Swimming Pool, Sporting Activities, Cooking, Lifesaving, Survival and Outdoor Activities.

       

      ONE OFF SPORTS EVENTS/FUNCTIONS/CONFERENCES & TRAINING COURSES
      Beeslack has an array of resources and facilities available for hire. We presently cater for a broad range of events, and we are only too happy to arrange accommodation and resources to meet group and individual needs.       FITNESS SUITE AVAILABILITY
      FITNESS SUITE Our Fitness suite is open for individual hire and group bookings. All participants must attend an Induction Programme before use. If you have not exercised for a while, it is essential to have a health check up with your doctor.  Why not get together with a friend, prepare yourself for your holidays, the festive season orthat new outfit.

      We have a small but friendly gym with something for everyone. Annual Membership Joining Fee:  £12.00, Annual unlimited use: £56.00 (this includes membership joining fee), Monthly fee: £11.50 unlimited use, Hourly fee: £1.75. To book please call: 01968 673893 (Open 7 days).
      Numbers are limited to a maximum of 8 people.

      Opening hours: Monday – Friday 9 am – 9.30 pm  & Saturday – Sunday 9 am – 5.30 pm
      Annual membership fee is £12 with a £1.75 per hour or £11.50 per month unlimited use or £56 per annum unlimited use (including the annual membership fee). Inductions available on Tuesday evenings or by prior arrangement

      Occasional times are block booked by school or groups and these may vary from term to term. If you wish to book an INDUCTION and or to book the Fitness Suite, please call the Community Education Office on 01968 673893

      ALL WEATHER – FACILITIES
      Beeslack have a All Weather Astro Turf Facility. Unfortunately this area is not floodlit although it is still possible to play 5-a-side Football, Hockey and Tennis at weekends from 9.00 am till dusk.
      We also have an all weather floodlit ash pitch for hire, which can be used for football training.
      OPENING TIMES
      As a community school our Community Education Programme is on offer throughout the calendar year. Please note we do not close during school holiday periods although opening hours may be altered somewhat. We do however close on PUBLIC HOLIDAYS and access may be limited or restricted during exam times. This will however be kept to a minimum. We close Friday - Monday inclusive during the September and Easter holiday weekends.
      Some daytime programme changes should be expected during school holiday periods (e.g. October, Christmas, Easter and Summer). In the evenings during most holiday periods, it is most likely that our normal programme will continue. Beeslack is open daily from 9.00 am – 9.45 pm Monday – Friday, and from 9.00 am – 6.00 pm Saturday – Sunday.

      HUMAN BIOLOGY HIGHER LEVEL - The Higher Human Biology course will be of additional interest to anyone wishing to pursue a career in health care and science.  It will help to develop an understanding of biological principles that can be applied to the any issues facing individuals and society today.  The recommended entry level to this course is Standard Grade Biology at Grade 1 or 2, alternatively Intermediate 2 in Biology.  The course is divided into 3 units.  This course September 2014 from 7.00 – 9.00 pm and will run for approx 30 weeks. 

      ARCHERY CLUB - Meets on Friday evenings 7.00 – 9.45 pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30 – 11.30 am. The club shoots indoors throughout the winter and outdoors in the summer months.       ASTROLOGY TASTER CLASS –Do you ever read your stars in the daily paper/weekly magazine and wondered how do they know all the information? How do they do it? How is my friend the same star sign as me yet completely different from me?  Who is my ideal partner?  Who should I avoid? This 4 week taster course will introduce you to Astrology and how to use your own personal birth chart.

      BEESLACK ALL STARS DISABILITY SPORTS CLUB Open to Children 5+ and Young Adults of all abilities - This sports activity club operates on Tuesday evenings from 6.45 – 8.45 pm and on Sunday afternoons from 1.00 – 3.00 pm.  A wide variety of sports are on offer with activities to suit all including all of the following:  Boccia, Goal Ball, Basketball, Swimming, Football, Table Tennis, Hockey and much more.  For further info please contact Lynne Sturgeon on 07981246139

      BOCCIAThis group meets on a Sunday from 3.00 – 4.00 pm.  We are encouraging the development of the Boccia game and competition through experienced coaches offering relevant pathways. Training people (adults and children) with additional support needs to competition level.  Boccia is a seated disabled sport which can be played as an individual or team event.  Our aim is to introduce the game of Boccia to beginners and encourage experienced players within an individual and team environment to help promote the game.  For further info please contact Lynne Sturgeon on 07981246139

      BEESLACK CAMERA CLUB - Tuition in camera skills, Digital processing, mainly with Photoshop.  Printing and scanning facilities are available.  The club participates in competitive activities with other clubs in the Lothian’s in addition to internal competitions for printed and projected images and Audio Visual presentations.  Guest speakers are a regular feature dealing with a wide variety of photographic subjects.       BEESLACK FAMILY DISABLED CLUB This group meets on Sunday afternoons from 12.30 – 4.00 pm. This family oriented club offers a wide range of activities e.g. Computing, Arts & Crafts, Swimming, Woodwork, Music Therapy, Cookery, Pool and Café and much more.       CAKE DECORATING CLASS - INTERMEDIATE This course is suitable for those participants who have completed the beginner’s course in Cake Decorating and would like to develop their skills further.  Participants will build on techniques used to produce themed cakes, simple models, piping techniques and wired flowers.  Participants will be expected to purchase their own materials. If you interested in learning more about the art of cake decorating/or brushing up on your skills, please come and join us.

      COMPUTING CLASS FOR BEGINNERS - The Computing for beginners is specifically designed for an absolute beginner or someone who is looking to gain more confidence in the use of a computer and its ever increasing role in our day to day lives.  The use of Microsoft Office is a major focus over the duration of the course; however Internet, Email, Security, Digital Cameras etc are all covered within the course.  Do you feel intimidated by all the jargon? Come along and join this friendly class on a Wednesday evening from 7.00 – 9.00 pm. 

      COOKING MADE EASY – Can’t cook?  Won’t cook?  Do you enjoy cooking but find recipes quite complicated. Learn how to follow the easy step by step instructions but produce great dishes at the end. This course is designed to make cooking easy by taking you through the step by step processes. This may involve ‘cooking for one’ or how to make a sauce easy as well as learning how to make the best use of what’s in your fridge. There will be an additional cost for ingredients.

      COUNTRY DANCING - Our Country Dance Class meets every Tuesday evening from 8.00 – 9.45 pm.  This group is simply to encourage like minded ladies to enjoy country dance in a warm and friendly environment. Please call Moira Hill on 01968 677436 for further details.

      DISABILITY SWIMS SQUAD - This is a group of disabled swimmers with varying disabilities which includes a range of physical, learning and visual impairments. Our aims and objectives are: To improve on swimming strokes and techniques, increase physical fitness, emphasis is on competitive training, to encourage the swimmers to aim for Scottish Team and Olympic Team.  If you know of anyone who shows swimming talent and you would like to know more, please call Pat Agnew on 079941194976.

      DRESSMAKING CLASS – Monday and Tuesday evening 6.30 – 8.30 pm. Join our class, which is tailored to suit your personal needs.  Bring along a project you would like help with, whether it is sewing, clothing, soft furnishings or alterations.  Copy from garments and learn how to follow pattern.  Cover basis techniques to complete cushions, curtains and roman blinds.  Bring along a basic sewing kit.  Come and improve your skills, feel more confident with the finished product

      FURNITURE RESTORATION CLASS. Tuesday 6.00 – 8.00 pm. If you have any small items that you would like help with.  Our instructor will be happy to give guidance and advice. All aspects of furniture restoration from stripping the wood, repolishing to re-jointing.  Full upholstery projects or just to replace a top cover, don’t worry if you miss a week, everyone works on their own project at their own pace. 

      FRIDAY CLUB - This group of disabled adults meet once a week to socialise and swim.  Their activities include pool, bowling and chatting.  The group also hold social evenings throughout the year to help with Fundraising projects. Friday 7.45 – 9.45pm. If you would be interested in helping at the club or would like to become a member please give us a call.

      IPAD/IPOD/KINDLE/IPHONE - This class will look at getting started with the IPad. The session will help users to discover and explore the many uses of the Ipad/Ipod/Kindle/Iphones. Classes can be tailored to meet your needs. Time 7.00 – 9.00pm.

      ITALIAN CLASS (BEGINNERS) - Going on holiday to Italy?  If so then why not come along to learn some basic Italian.  This class is held on Monday evenings from 7.00 – 9.00 pm.  Learning the basics of the Italian Language will allow students to express themselves in simple sentences and communicate in a more confident manner when you go on holiday. 

      OVER 50’S GROUPS - EVERGREENS, LEISURE PURSUITS, GOLDEN GIRLS These three clubs meet separately on Tuesday /Thursday mornings and a Thursday afternoon.  All the groups take part in a wide range of activities e.g.   Bowling, Calligraphy, Art group, Card games, Pool, Swimming, Walking, Holiday’s, Craft table and general chit chat.  If you would like more information or would like to come along and pay a visit to the club, please call 01968 673893 for more details.

      NPLQ - The NPLQ is an internationally recognised award for pool lifeguards.  The course assists in developing fitness, knowledge, skill, judgement, communication and team work.  The candidate pack contains all the resources for the NPLQ.  If you are interested in becoming a qualified Lifeguard, please get in touch.  Candidates MUST be 16 years of age.       PHOTOGRAPHY INTEREST CLASS – Photography the basics. Learn how to take photographs.  This class covers photography the basics, taking photographs, using different settings to achieve different results, basic re-touching using computer software, lighting and more..... Tuesday 7.00 – 9.00pm. 

      POTTERY – This class will cover basic hand-building techniques including pinch pots, slab pots and coil pots.  Participants will be required to provide their own materials.  Names are being taken to gauge if there is an interest.

      SILVER JEWELLERY MAKING CLASS (Thursday) - Would you like to create and wear some exclusive jewellery?  Learn how to cut, bend, shape and solder as you make your own pieces of jewellery.  The necessary tools will be supplied and you can buy silver at the class if required.  Project materials start at £3.00.  New term date to be confirmed.

      SWIMMING FOR ADULTS (CASUAL SWIM OR LESSONS). We have a range of swimming programmes for the adults who want a leisurely swim or a workout.  Casual swim cost is £3.30 per visit.  Lessons £4.05 per visit. Ladies Swim Monday evening from 7.00 – 8.00 pm, Monday mixed swim 9.00 – 9.45 pm; Cost £2.50 per week payable in advance. Wednesday Lunchtime Ladies only Swim or Lessons 1.00 – 2.00 pm, Wednesday evening Ladies only 8.00 – 9.00 pm. Friday evening 8.45 – 9.45 pm.  . These sessions cater for all levels of ability.

      TAI CHI CLASSES - Thursday evenings from 6.30 – 9.00 pm. All aspects of Tai Chi Chaun to include Hand Forms, Pushing Hands, Self Defence, Internal Yin and Yang Exercises. This group meets every Thursday to practice Wutan Tai Chi Chaun.  There are five elements to this martial art and we cover them all.

      WEIGHTWATCHERS - This group meets every Thursday where members of the public can learn more about healthy body and mind. The aim of this class is to introduce students to asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation techniques including strength as well as flexibility in yoga practice.

      BASKETBALL (Primary School P3 – P7) a fun and enjoyable way to keep fit and healthy while learning to play basketball in an open and active group environment.  The basketball skills include training, games, ball control, passing, dribbling, shooting, games rules, teamwork/teambuilding, training exercises and general fitness.  Interested then give us a call.  The class meets on a Saturday morning from 10.30 – 11.30 am. 

      CAMERA CLUB FOR CHILDREN AGED 11 – 18 years. Monday evening’s 7.00 pm. Parents welcome.  Come along and find out all about it.  Do you enjoy taking photos?  Would you like to learn more about your camera?  Do you like meeting people and having fun!       DOLPHINS – Beeslack Children’s Swim Programme (Monday – Sunday)

      AIMS OF THE GROUP:  Beeslack children’s swim classes have been operating for over 20 years.  We run a progressive system of swimming lessons for over 400 people ranging from pre-school age up to teenagers.  Fully qualified, experienced Swim Tutors are employed to deliver our extensive programme.
      Beeslack Swim Programme is fully supported by the Scottish Swimming Association (SASA) and the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) Learn to Swim Programmes.  The ‘Learn to Swim’ and ‘National Awards’ along with are essential for building on both swimming and life skills which can be taught alongside any quality learn to swim programme.  Our awards are a great way to motivate and encourage development of swimmers and they are also a good way of keeping parents up to date on their child’s progress.

      ASSESSMENTS:  Assessments for entry into any of our classes can be arranged by contacting the Community Education Office.  A suitable time/day will be arranged with teaching staff and swimmers will be notified direct.  You will either be offered a place in a class or put onto the waiting list until a suitable class becomes available.

      WAITING LIST:  We currently hold a waiting list for children who are 41/2 years and over.  When a space becomes available, you will be contacted directly to arrange a suitable start date.  If the day and time offered is not suitable your child will be placed back on the waiting list until a suitable time becomes available.

      DRAMA CLASSES – Craft Theatre and Music School (C.R.A.F.T) hold Drama Classes each Friday between 3.30 – 7.30 pm. These classes cater for 41/2 – 17 year olds. For further information please call Derek Douglas on 07949973388

      JUNIOR JOG & FUN ATHLETICS – (7 years plus) Beeslack offer a working relationship between Jog Scotland and Fun Athletics to deliver opportunities to improve jumping, throwing and running.  Energetic activities that promote health and well being in a fun and safe environment Weekly class incorporating fun Athletics and Junior Jog children encouraged and supported whilst learning and improving their core skills.  This class meets on a Monday evening from 6.15 – 7.30 pm. 

      KIC DANCE COMPANY - Friday:  2.00 – 3.00 pm   Senior class – 7 years -12 years.   Classes cover a variety of dance styles from street/hip-hop, contemporary & jazz. KIC prides itself on providing educational classes that are FUN and geared towards developing an individual’s self confidence and social skills, as well as enhancing their health and wellbeing.  There is scope for performance opportunities as the classes’ progress. Classes are designed to allow students to express themselves in a safe & friendly environment. Come and join us!!!!!       LIFESAVING CLUBBeeslack Life Saving Club operates on Saturday mornings from 10.00 – 12.30 pm and is aimed at young people aged 8 – 18 years. Opportunities exist for members to take part in Local, District, Regional and International Competitions, either individually or as part of a team. Experienced qualified instructors tutor this group.       MIDLOTHIAN SWIMMING CLUB – MSC use Beeslack Community High School to train several times a week. If you feel your child (aged 7 years +) has the necessary skills and wants to join the swimming club please contact Kathy Henly on 07507240134. Kathy will advise dates for next trials. Remember, you do not have to live in Penicuik to join.

      PARENT & TODDLER GROUP – Meets at Beeslack on Friday mornings from 10.00 – 12 noon. The new term will commence Friday 31 August. New members welcomed.       ROOKIE LIFESAVING COURSE - Introduction to basic Lifesaving skills for children aged between 7 – 12 years a series of basic lifesaving skills which are divided into 4 areas, water safety, rescue, self rescue and emergency response.  New member’s welcome. Sunday 4.00 – 5.00 pm.

      TAE KWON DO - Call Angus Budge 07753836410   ABudge@talktalk.net  children’s classes start on 22 August.  Wednesday’s 18:00 - 19:00 juniors. Do you want to improve confidence, strength, flexibility, stamina and discipline?  Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, regular training in Tae Kwon Do will help you achieve all of these while learning new skills.
